Welcome to Sawasdee 🌿

Learn Thai vocabulary with flashcards and quizzes — meanings in English, Japanese and Chinese, with a little buddy cheering you on.

The tabs

  • Study — flip and rate flashcards. This is where learning happens.
  • Quiz — multiple-choice rounds. Choose what the question shows (Thai, Romanization, IPA, Meaning, or Listen) and what you pick from (Thai, Romanization, IPA or Meaning) — so you can drill reading, pronunciation, or meaning. Set the meaning language (EN/JP/ZH) and a pool: this category, cards due for review, or ones you marked hard. (Listen appears when your device has a Thai voice.)
  • Browse — search and skim every word in your deck.
  • Progress — watch your buddy grow as you learn.
  • Games — learn by playing. Petals: spell the Thai word before the jasmine loses its petals. Memory Match: flip the tiles to pair each Thai word with its match. Tone Hero: read the word and tap its tone — Thai has five (mid, low, falling, high, rising).
  • Story — read a short survival story set in Thailand, then blank out the Thai and fill it back in from memory. Switch the story between EN / 日本語 / 中文 with the language chips. Choose whether each word’s hint shows the meaning, romanization, IPA, or nothing at all — and whether the blank’s answer choices appear in Thai, romanization, or IPA.
  • Guide — you are here!

Start with the Foundations 📖

Before the vocabulary chapters, the Study picker opens with a Chapter 0 · Foundations chapter that teaches you to actually read Thai. Work through it in order:

  • Consonants — the alphabet, each letter shown in its class colour.
  • Consonant classes — a lesson on the three classes (middle / high / low) that decide a syllable's tone.
  • Vowels (สระ) and Tone marks (วรรณยุกต์) — the core vowel sounds and the four tone marks.
  • Final consonants (ตัวสะกด) — how ~30 letters collapse into just 8 ending sounds, plus live vs dead syllables.
  • Tone rules — the capstone lesson, with an interactive tone calculator: set the class, vowel length, ending and mark, and watch the tone appear.
  • Telling the time — Thai's 6-hour clock, with an interactive clock you can step through hour by hour and hear out loud.

Cards marked 📖 Lesson aren't flashcards — they're short illustrated lessons with tap-through mini-exercises.

Studying a card

Tap a card to flip between the prompt and the answer. Swipe, or use the arrows, to move between cards.

After each card, tell the app how it went — this schedules when you'll see it again:

Again didn't know it   Hard shaky   Good got it   Easy too simple

Choosing what you see

  • Category — the picker at the top chooses what you study. Tap a chapter header to study the whole chapter's decks together, or pick a single deck beneath it. Use the Chapters / All decks toggle to switch between the grouped and flat views.
  • Meanings (EN / 日 / 简 / 繁) — the pills next to the picker choose which languages appear on the back of cards and in Browse. Pick up to two.
  • Front & Pronounce — set what appears on the front of a card (Thai or meaning) and how pronunciation is written: romanization with tone marks, or IPA with tone bars. Tap the 🔊 speaker on a card to hear the word in Thai (shown when your device has a Thai voice).

How words progress

Each word climbs four stages as you keep getting it right. The better you know it, the less often it returns:

NewLearningFamiliarMastered

Tap the on a card to add it to your ★ Review list. When review cards are waiting, a ⏰ Study due button appears to gather them for you.

Browse

Search by Thai, pronunciation, or any meaning language. The filter chips narrow the list to one stage — New, Learning, Familiar, Mastered — or your starred ★ Review words.

Your buddy & growth

Choose from six buddies — Sawasdee the elephant, Mali the cat, Malai the dog, Tui the buffalo, Chai the fighting cock, or Thong the water monitor. Studying and quizzing earn XP and grow your buddy through six stages — give them a tap sometimes, they like it. The Progress tab shows how far you've come, your day streak, and what's next.

Profiles & backup

Each learner can keep their own profile on this device. From the account chip you can switch profiles and copy a backup code — save it somewhere safe to restore your progress later, or on another device.

📖 A Day in Thailand

One survival story, told in the order you'd actually live it — from the plane door to your first Thai friend. Read it through, then switch to Fill in the blanks and recall the Thai from memory.
